Title: Mother Tongue
Year: 2018

The photobook ‘Mother Tongue’ emphasises mundanity. In my photographic work, I focused on my mother’s daily rituals and emotions. I include scans of her original diary which reflects her varied personality. As the viewer looks through the book they will begin to notice a pattern, the mother is always leaning against the same orange wall. The reoccurring wall adds an extra layer of meaning to the journal pages because she always writes her planner while leaning on that wall. Also, I am showing how different she is in the real, outside world. The tongue she speaks is silence. She is stuck in a rut, reliving the daily melancholy and tiredness in quiet. The mother’s mouth is shut or covered in every photograph. The main concept is can say something without speaking?
